  • The employer from whom you seek work uses the E-Verify Program

  • The student hasn’t already received a 17-month stem extension of OPT ie. only one 24-month extension is possible, regardless of how many degrees have been obrtained

  • Submitting documents to the university: The application process includes everything from selecting the course of your choice, short-listing universities, comparing fees to fit well into your budget, and then collating the documents. 
  • Admission interview: Once you have submitted your documents to the university you will have to appear for an interview
  • Education loan and finance: It is after the interview that you can get your education loan and other finances in order
  • Received your I-20: Once you have cracked the interview and your documents have been approved, you will receive your I-20. The I-20 confirms that you are lawfully enrolled in an academic program in the United States. The 1-20 form also denotes that you have been accepted into the process. 
  • Visa Filing – Once the 1-20 arrives, you can start filing for your student VISA
  • The following steps are to be followed for your USA Student Visa filing process: 1). Payment of the SEVIS Fee 2). Filling up the Visa Application Form 3).  Interview at the Embassy.

TYPES OF student visaS IN USA

There are 3 types of study visas issued by the govt. of USA for international students:

  • F1 Visa – This is a non-immigrant visa for international students who wish to study at SEVP-certified institutions in the USA. F1 Visa may be provided up to 120 days in advance of the student’s orientation day. However, international students will not be allowed to enter the USA on an F-1 30 days before their orientation day
  • J1 Visa – The J-1 Visa is an exchange visitor visa issued to those coming to the USA to participate in educational and cultural exchange programs

  •  M1 Study Visa – An M1 visa is again a non-immigrant visa issued for non-academic purposes. Similar to the F1 visa, an M1 Visa may be provided up to 120 days in advance of the student’s orientation day. 

Working rights for students in the USA 

F1 Visa holders are suitable for a total of 12 months of Optional Practical Training [OPT] as per the educational level they complete. To get the added 17 months of OPT extension [a total of 29 months which comprises 12 months of OPT as stated above], the student must finish his/ her degree in STEM Majors
