WHAT are the LANGUAGE OPTIONS TO STUDY IN GERMANY?
Bachelor courses in Germany are taught in German as well as in English Language.
Students who wish to study their undergraduate course in German must possess B2 or C1 Level proficiency. Language proficiency certificates from German language institutes like Goethe, Telc, and Testdaf are mandatory to be submitted as legitimate proof of German Language proficiency.
English-taught bachelor courses in Germany are often marked as “International Courses”. Students who wish to study their undergraduate course in English have to submit an IELTS examination certificate with an Overall Band Score of 6 or above. If you acquire the desired score, you can study English taught bachelors programme in Germany.
WHAT are the WORKING RIGHTS IN GERMANY?
The working rights in Germany differ on case to case basis, depending upon the type of visa you are on in Germany. Most students fall into the two categories below.
In Germany, international students are governed by a prescribed set of regulations that determine how long they can work before their taxes and social contributions are deducted. Non-EU students have to limit work hours to either 120 full days or 240 half days per year.
In Germany, students will get stay back of 18 months to find jobs in a related field after their course is through, which means they can get a job-seeking visa for 18 months.
Eligibility criteria & ADDTIONAL REQUIREMENTS
To seek a bachelor’s education in Germany, it is pertinent to understand the eligibility criteria for studying bachelor’s in Germany. Germany mandates 13 years of pre-university academic experience, which means that only after acquiring 13 years of education a student can pursue a bachelor’s degree in Germany. Hence, if you have already completed your pre-university education of two years (after completing your 12th standard) you have to complete one more year of your Bachelor-specific course from a recognised university and acquire 10+2+1 year of pre-university education before applying for a bachelor’s course in Germany. Students seeking admission to engineering and related technical courses can even submit JEE Advanced certificates instead.
If you have completed one year of Mechanical Engineering from a recognized university in India, you can apply for a Bachelor’s in Mechanical Engineering course in Germany, the same applies to B.Sc in Physics. However, if you have passed JEE Main and Advanced you needn’t pursue that one year in B.E-Mechanical for your undergraduate education in Germany. The aforementioned criteria are the most important ones for your bachelor’s education in Germany irrespective of the field you choose.
After your documents and certificates are in order, you are supposed to submit all of the documents for the APS verification and then acquire your APS certificate. The Academic Evaluation Centre of the German embassy will check the authenticity of the certificates submitted by students and then issue you an APS Certificate which is a very important and mandatory document for your visa process. APS verification fee (non-refundable) is 18,000/- INR which is to be transferred to the APS bank account.
Known as Test für Ausländische Studierende in German (Test for Academic Studies), TestAS is a mandatory aptitude test for foreign students from non-EU countries. It is mandated for students who wish to seek undergraduate education at a German university. Test AS does not assess your understanding of any special, technical subjects, nor does it assess your personality. Its purpose is to evaluate a student’s cognitive abilities which are significant for his/her success in the course of studies. The TestAS is administered as a paper-based test and in a digital format as well. Both versions are conducted three times a year.
Students from India who have passed the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Main and Advanced does not need to appear for TestAs.
A Student Blocked Account is a bank account opened with a local German bank by a student aspiring to study in Germany. The purpose of the Student Blocked Account is to reserve funds that may be needed to support the student’s living expenses and education purpose. The Blocked Account is requested by the university itself and the amount to be deposited in the same varies as per the economic climate of Germany and the fee structure.
How much amount is required to be blocked in a student blocked account in Germany?
Though students are advised to retain an amount of €11,208 for an entire year or €934 for a month in their Blocked Accounts, it is recommended to add more owing to the service charges applicable on the account in Germany. The accommodation payment, living expenses, costs of a student should ideally be covered through the money in the Blocked Account. Since the Blocked Account has a standing limit on the amount of money that can be withdrawn, it also compels students to discipline their spending.
To make the transfer process more hassle-free for international students, the EU acknowledges education in the form of credits. This system is referred to as the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System, or ECTS. Students are generally guided to the official European Commission ECTS site to better understand the intricacies of the system and its process.
- 60 ECTS credits = 1 full year of study or work.
- Bachelor’s must have either 180 or 240 ECTS credits.
Public Universities: Usually free of Cost -however apart from the tuition fee, there is a semester fee that might be applicable for the students for bachelor’s programs.
Private Universities: Private universities offer undergraduate courses at a tuition fee that falls within the range of EUR 3000 to EUR 6000 per semester depending on university and courses.
